The Ruling Cambodian’s
People’s Party’s (CPP) expressed its regret over yesterday talks with the main
opposition Cambodia National Rescue Party (CNRP), but reaffirmed its stance to
continue the negotiations, according to a CPP’s press statement released after
the talks.
The CPP side of the
joint commission to study and prepare the election reform frameworks agreed to
include the “election institution reform” in the frameworks, but did not agree
with the fact that the election institution is a constitutional institution and
the institution’s members are approved by 2/3 vote of the Members of National
Assembly.
Speaking at a joint
press briefing, Deputy Prime Minister Bin Chhin and a CPP’s senior member said
the meeting focused on two topics – the reform of the National Election
Committee, and the neutrality and integrity of the election-related civil
society organizations.
Last Monday, both
parties’ representatives agreed to prepare for the voter registration and list
to guarantee and protect the right to vote of all citizens. They also agreed to
create a law on finance of the political parties; and other election reform
frameworks including election institution reform, election conflict resolution
mechanisms, and medias and broadcasting means for political parties, etc.
Both sides agreed to
continue their talks on Mar. 17.
