The Japan-funded solar
power generation system of Phnom Penh Water Supply Authority (PPWSA) worth over
US$7 million was inaugurated under the Deputy Prime Minister Keat Chhon. According
to PPWSA, the system was installed at Phoum Prek Water Treatment Plant (WTP) on
July 19, 2012 by a Japanese company. The construction project took 12 months
and cost approximately US$7.78 million. The purpose of solar power generation
system is to contribute to reducing the expense on electricity at Phoum Prek
WTP, aiming at keeping reasonable clean water price for customers in Phnom Penh
capital city as well as to carrying out the government policy on clean energy
use and greenhouse gas reduction.
The solar power system
can generate 1 million kilowatt-hours of power per year to serve the needs of
PPWSA and Phoum Prek WTP. PPWSA would be able to reduce its expense on
electricity of about US$200,000 a year and carbon dioxide (CO2) emission can be
reduced by 640 tons annually.
