Kampong Speu Palm Sugar Production To Increase to 300 Tons

Kampong Speu palm sugar production is expected to reach 300 tons in the 2015-2016 period, a double increase from previous year, in response to the growing demand for palm sugar. It has 142 families as members in 15 villages of Samrong Torng and Oudong districts with the use of over 3,000 palm trees. It is exported to France, Japan, the United States, China, South Korea and Thailand.

MFIs’ Loans and Deposits Increase in First Half of 2015

The loan disbursement of the Microfinance Institutions (MFIs) has increased to some US$2,436 million in the first six months of 2015, up 20%. And by June 2015, the 39 MFIs and 6 financial service provision non-governmental organizations received a total of US$1,123 million as deposit, up 25% from the previous year.

Nearing lower-middle income

Cambodia is expected to reach a GDP per capita of $1,220 this year, putting it on course to being a lower-middle income economy, the figure will be a jump from the 2014 estimate that put the GDP per capita at $1,123 for last year. World Bank estimated that GDP growth will fall slightly to 6.9% in 2015 from the 7% was estimated in 2014.

Ministry gets own TV, radio platform

The Ministry of Interior is planning to launch a $30 million radio and television station with backing from a Chinese company, with testing set to start right around the time the opposition party’s new station is slated to begin broadcasting. Sun TV will cost $3 million to $4 million and is supposed to launch in early 2016.

Cambodia’s Economic Situation on Positive Trend This Year

Cambodia’s Senior Minister and Minister of Commerce has recently affirmed that the country’s economic situation this year is on the positive trend. GDP per capita is projected to be at US$1,220 in 2015. The international reserves in 2014 were some US$4.4 billion and are expected to reach US$5.1 billion by the end of 2015.

EuroCham moves to strengthen real estate

The European Chamber of Commerce signed MoU with the Ministry of Land Management, Urban Planning and Construction to help strengthen standards and encourage European investment in Cambodia’s real estate sector. At a separate event EuroCham also signed MoU with Cambodia’s Anti-Corruption Unit, agreeing to help fight graft in the Kingdom.

Gov’t to Finish Northern Rail Line in 2016

The government has set aside some $33 million to finish rebuilding Cambodia’s northern rail line by late next year. The railway hopes to start in September 2015, with trains running between Phnom Penh and Poipet by 2017. For Phnom Penh to Sihanouk Ville, it already started running the full length of the 266-km in December 2012.

Cambodia finalises tourism strategy

Cambodia is expected to welcome 5 million foreign visitors in 2015 and 7.5 million by 2020. The majority of foreign tourists visited cultural and historical sites, particularly the Angkor World Heritage Site. Last year, 77.7% of Asia and the Pacific region; 15.7% from Europe; 6.1% from Americas; 3.5% from Oceania; and only 0.3% from the Middle East and 0.1% from Africa.

Factory libraries push literacy

KSMA To Export Some 300 Tons of Mangoes Per Month to Neighboring Countries

Salt stockpiles keep on rising

Cambodian salt is piling up. Salt production in Kampot and Kep provinces – home to Cambodia’s salt fields – reached 270,000 tons this year with a better quality alternative. Currently, about 700 farmers cultivate around 4,500 hectares of salt production land within the two provinces.

Abbatoir set to open in October

Cambodia will process Australian beef as customs is holding up machinery for the country’s first modern slaughterhouse. The firm is in Preah Sihanouk province’s Prek Toal village and that installing the machinery was the final step before starting production. Up to 30% of beef produced will be sold in Cambodia.

Insurance option for small hold farmers

The Cambodian Agriculture Cooperative Insurance Company (CACIC) yesterday announced the start of an agriculture micro insurance service to help rice farmers better respond to climate change. It will help reduce the cases where farmers sell their land to pay back high interest rate loans, migrate for work abroad and [help to] become a professional or commercial farmers to [ensure more] sustainable farming.”

In search of export market for mangoes

Cambodia is seeking to export its mangoes to South Korea. The main export destinations for Cambodian mangoes are China, followed by France, Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam. The firm was looking to export to Japan and South Korea as well, although a significant hurdle remained higher packaging standards in both countries.

Cambodia Plans to Build Tourism Port in Kampot Province Soon

Cambodia taps Yoga

Cambodia’s Ministry of Tourism will support Yoga classes at tourist destinations to enhance the tourist experience in the country. It is being established in the capital Phnom Penh, Siem Reap and at resorts particularly to cater to tourists. It gained a supporting vote from 175 nations, the highest number ever for a resolution in the 193-member UN General Assembly.

High 2015 yields for pepper growers

Kampot pepper production almost doubled during 2015’s harvest season compared to last year’s, although prices have remained flat. Production increased thanks to an expansion of the area under cultivation and better preparation from farmers. We expected only 50 tons for this harvest season, but the pepper yield was higher than we expected.

Biogas to power rural areas

Commercial biogas plants will be installed across the Kingdom to provide electricity to rural areas that are off the national grid. According to UNIDO, 55 per cent of the rural population gets their power from automobile battery-generated electricity, whereas 3% use individual power generating units, like diesel generators.

Japan, Cambodia agree to work closely on developing Mekong region

China, EU drive rice export gains in first half

Cambodian rice exports for the first half of 2015 followed an upward trajectory compared to the same period last year, as growing demand from China for white rice and the European Union’s growing appetite for parboiled rice buoyed exports. Rice export totalled 283,825 tons, an increase of almost 60%.

Fisheries production rises 2.4% in latest year

Cambodia's fisheries production rose to 745,255 tons in 2014, up 2.4% from 728,000 a year earlier. The increase reflected a surge in aquaculture production and a small increase in marine fisheries output which together offset a decline in production from freshwater fisheries. The output from aquaculture jumped to 120,000 tons, up from 90 tons a year earlier.

Cambodia taps national park travel

A Japanese company, A2A Town (Cambodia), has submitted a request to the Cambodian Ministry of Environment to establish helicopter flights from Phnom Penh to Preah Soramrit Kossamak Kirirom National Park in Kampong Speu province. The company invested around USD500 million with its Cambodian development partner.

Cambodia enjoys tourism growth

Cambodia’s tourist arrivals registered an increase of 8.6% in April. The country attracted 361,139 trips compared to 332,690 during the same month last year. Vietnam led the field with 89,907 visits up 14.2%. Other markets in the top five were: China (54,800; +30.9%); South Korea (27,746; +8.6%); Thailand (24,397; +31.7%); and Laos (22,584; -4.2%).

Twin tower skyscraper proposed for capital

A Chinese and local developer are in discussions with Phnom Penh’s City Hall to build a $3 billion, 500-metre-high twin tower project in the center of the city, making it the tallest building in the capital. The Diamond Tower, which was expected to be completed by 2017.

New SEZ aims for logistics hub

Cambodia To Spend US$20 Million on Local Agro-Food Production Project
