Hong Kong Airlines launches direct flight to Cambodia

A Hong Kong Airlines’ aircraft is welcomed by a traditional water salute in Phnom Penh. Strong economic and tourism ties between Hong Kong and Cambodia encouraged the airline to begin regular flights to Cambodia. The airline operates flights on the Hong Kong-­Phnom Penh route every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday.

Angkor Air Set to Swoop into Seoul

Cambodia’s flagship carrier Angkor Air will commence services to South Korea, with regular flights between Phnom Penh and Seoul from 17 April. The regular service will offer on Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Sunday using a 178-seat Airbus A321 jets. The flights will help strengthen relations with both countries, including business ties and tourism.

Donaco dumps its new junket operator

Donaco International Ltd has terminated its junket deal with Macau VIP gaming promoter Heng Sheng Group. The company was considering options to expand its gaming floor into the adjoining 240-room Star Paradise Hotel to accommodate an expected surge in Thai VIP traffic. In addition to the casino, Donaco operates the Aristo International Hotel in northern Vietnam near the Chinese border.

New Border Link Expected to Boost Trade with Thailand

Cambodia and Thailand are set to have a new international border crossing on National Road 5, linking Banteay Meanchey province and Thailand’s Sa Kaeo province. In December, Cambodia and Thai agreed to triple bilateral trade to $15 billion a year by 2020. And it is expected to get a boost when the rail line connecting Phnom Penh and Bangkok is completed. This is expected to occur by the end of this year.

133-Story Twin Towers Get Initial Approval

The government is reviewing a mammoth $1-billion proposal by the Thai Boon Roong Group to build twin commercial skyscrapers in Phnom Penh which, if constructed, would be among the world’s tallest buildings. It is the 133-story would be situated on five hec­tares of prime real estate across from the NagaWorld casino—the current site of Dreamland amusement park “The project would need at least 3 or 4 years to complete”.

Firms ready to expand despite local skills gap

A Eurocham business confidence survey has revealed that 81% of respondents – members of the business association – planned to increase investments and expand their operations in the Kingdom. Of the respondents, most were local SMEs with foreign ownership, with the top three sector represented being transportation and logistics, pharmaceutical and tourism firms.

French bank set to enter Kingdom

French bank BRED Banque Populaire – part of the second-largest banking group in France – will start commercial operations in Cambodia later this year, marking the first foray for a European bank in the Kingdom since the late 1990s. Cambodia had 36 commercial banks, 11 specialised banks and nearly 50 microfinance institutions at the end of 2015.

Insurance Industry Sees Double-digit Premium Growth

Total premiums for general insurance rose 16.4% last year to about $61.6 million, from $53 million in 2014, with property, fire, vehicle and medical insurance leading the way. It is the fastest growing segment of insurance was property and fire insurance accounted for 39.7% of total premiums last year, followed by vehicle insurance at 15.1%, medical at 14.1%, personal accident at 6.8%, engineering at 5.8%, and marine, aviation, and transport at 4%.

ASEAN Still a Tough Market for Rice Exports despite AEC

Cambodian rice exports are finding new markets and rising demand in ASEAN this year, but officials and exporters are not linking this to the ASEAN Economic Community (AEC), saying it was too early to tell what impact the regional trade bloc – which took effect at the end of last year – will have on rice exports. Cambodia exported 44,033 tons of rice – both white and fragrant – last month, up 22.6% from the 35, 921 tons in the same month last year.
