City Bus System to Get 40 Buses, 2 New Lines

Phnom Penh City Hall will in September establish two new municipal bus lines after 40 secondhand buses purchased from South Korea arrived at the port in Sihanoukville last week.

Deputy Chief of the municipal transport department’s transport office said the 40 secondhand buses cost $600,000 in total and would service the two new lines. The second line will run from Old Stadium’s parking lot north to Russei Keo district’s Kilometr Pram Buon commune before turning back to follow Monivong Bvld south to Takhmao City.

The third line will run from Pur Senchey district’s Choam Chao commune, past the “Russian Market” in Chamkar Mon district, and then head to the Night Market on Sothearos Boulevard before doubling back along Kim Il Sung and Mao Tse Toung boulevards to Choam Chao commune.

Cambodia's rubber exports up 91% in H1

Cambodia has seen a 91% rise in dry rubber exports in the first half of 2014 as revenue from the exports increased only 3% due to global decline of rubber prices.

During the January-June period this year, the country exported 42,190 tons of dry rubber, up 91% from 22,120 tons over the same period last year, the latest figures from the Ministry of Commerce showed Monday. The revenue from the exports was 75 million U.S. dollars during the first half of this year, up merely 3% from 73 million U. S. over the same period last year. A ton of dry rubber was sold at 1,800 U.S. dollars this month, down 28% from about 2,500 U.S. dollars in July last year.

The Southeast Asian nation has planted rubber trees on the area of about 330,000 hectares in which some 60,000 hectares are old enough to be yielded. Cambodian rubber has been sold to China, South Korea, Singapore, Malaysia and some European countries.

Preah Sihanouk Int’l Airport Welcomes First Direct International Route from Seoul

Skywings Asia Airlines with 142 passengers on-board launched seasonal flight services connecting Seoul of South Korea and Sihanoukville, Cambodia’s main beach resort destination.

Flight ZA2369 operated on a 180-seat Airbus 320 landed at Preah Sihanouk International Airport on 29 July at 14:03. The seasonal service is scheduled from July to the end of August. The launch of Skywings Asia airlines’ international charters from Seoul to Sihanoukville is a move in the right direction towards developing the Cambodian coastal city into a destination in its own right.

Passenger traffic at Preah Sihanouk International Airport has experienced significant growth although the number is modest. From January to June 2014, the total number of passengers has increased by 146% to 20,400 passengers.

Cambodia Business Conference opens registration

Cambodia's business community is anticipating keen interest from overseas investors as registration for the country’s international investment conference opens this week.

The International Business Chamber (IBC) of Cambodia investment conference will take place on October 6th and 7th at the Intercontinental Hotel in Phnom Penh. The event is expected to attract hundreds of overseas companies with an interest in investing in Cambodia. Topics for discussion at the event will include Cambodia' economic outlook as well as the country's competitiveness. Main sponsors for the IBC conference are Prudential Cambodia, Jardine Matheson Limited, Sciaroni and Associates, ACLEDA Bank and ANZ Royal.

ICT federation launched in Cambodia

The Information and Communications Technology (ICT) Federation was inaugurated here on Thursday with an aim to advance Cambodia to a digital age.

The secretary of state of the Ministry of Post and Telecommunication said the federation would be a main partner to work with the ministry in developing the ICT industry in Cambodia. Chairman of the ICT Federation, said the agency would strive to mobilize all IT companies to advance Cambodia into a digital age. Cambodia has seen rapid growth in mobile phones in the last five years.

The country has the population of 14.8 million, but the mobile phone has reached 20.2 million last year, up 6% year-on-year. Besides, the country has about 27 internet service providers serving around 2.7 million users.
