High
international demand is promoting active and wider pepper cultivation in
Cambodia with a hope to increase the country’s export of the product in the
coming 2015.
According
to Director of Agro-Industry Department, Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and
Fisheries, Mr. Khan Samban, Cambodians have increased the cultivation of
different types of pepper, especially in Kampong Cham, Kampot, Mondulkiri and
Rattanakiri provinces. “While the average local price of pepper is around US$6
per kilogram, growers can earn between US$10 to US$20 for the same quantity
from the international markets.”
Cambodia
exported around 5,000 tons of pepper and it was not enough to meet the existing
demand, especially for the white pepper. Though there is no record of the
expanded cultivation of pepper yet, officials claimed that the practice is
going far beyond last year’s 2,225 hectares.
