The Ministry of Commerce has been pushing farmers, communities, and
companies to register Geographical Indication (GI) to promote local potential
products and to boost the export as well.
The law on GI was signed by His Majesty the King on 20 January 2014
after it was approved by the National Assembly on 30 December 2013. The law
will protect the quality of a product to its origin under international law and
create brand recognition on the global stage, as well as preserve the knowledge
and know-how of producers.
There are currently 22 kinds of potential products for GI status. Those
products, ranging from rice, pepper, palm sugar to durians, lobsters and silk,
are from the provinces of Takeo, Kampot, Rattanakiri, Siem Reap, Kandal,
Banteay Meanchey, Stung Treng, Battambang, Kratie, Prey Veng, Kampong Cham, and
Pursat.
