Traffic Light System in Phnom Penh To Be Changed in 2015 under JICA’s Support

Traffic light system at some 100 places in Phnom Penh city will be changed in the upcoming 2015 under the support of Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) to promote safety and reduce traffic congestion.

The plan was made known on Tuesday at the closing ceremony of a two-day workshop on land road traffic safety.

The seminar provided the participants with skills of elaborating prioritized land road safety plans to be implemented with high effectiveness so as to reduce tragedies along the roads. Through the workshop, National Road Safety Committee (NRSC) encouraged municipal and provincial authorities to prepare their active plans on road safety at their localities by focusing on helmet wearing and the impacts of drink-driving in order to prevent and reduce the number of casualties to the minimal level.

For the first step of this training, NRSC has set 15 targeted provinces and municipality with the support budget from Global Road Safety Partnership in Cambodia. There were in total 4,322 cases of traffic accidents in 2013, killing 1,901 people, injuring thousands others, and costing the country about US$300 million.
