Thailand pins hopes on new railway to Cambodia

28 July 2014

Thai officials have joined a foundation stone-laying ceremony in Cambodia for the construction of a railway linking the two countrie.

Linking the border towns of Klong Luek in Thailand and Poipet in Cambodia, "the new line is expected to boost growth in tourism and trade." The official news agency said it was hoped that the new line would also enable the neighbouring provinces of Sakeo and Banteay Meanchey to be logistics hubs when the ASEAN Economy Community kicks off next year.

The section from Poipet to the Banteay Meanchey provincial capital of Sisophon, which is connected to Phnom Penh, has recently been undergoing rehabilitation.
