EU grant US$3.9 million to enhance the capacity of local authorities and the independence of the media in Cambodia

28 March 2014

EU has launched a call for proposals under the EU thematic program “Non-State Actors and Local Authorities in Development” for a total of EURO 2.9 Million (USD3.9 million) in grants to strengthen civil society and to enhance the participation of local authorities in Cambodia as a basis for a more equitable, open and democratic society.

This call aims at supporting Cambodia's efforts to reduce poverty and increase sustainable development through initiatives by local authorities and civil society organizations to address two key priority issues: (i) Strengthening the capacity of Non State Actors by developing partnerships with local authorities aimed at (a) further supporting the integration of service delivery into national systems; (b) strengthening existing local dispute resolution mechanism while further promoting and articulating citizens' concerns; 3) enhancing the independence of the media; (ii) Enhancing the capacity of local authorities to execute their institutional mandate, i.e. promote participation, effectively coordinate local development, and increase transparency and accountability in the delivery of public services.

Under the same program, the EU has supported some 31 projects since 2008 for a total amount of EURO 14.85 Million, including 8 projects implemented by local authorities. The deadline to submit concept notes is 29 April 2014 at 16:00 hrs.
