Prominent union leader summoned over embezzlement complaint

28 March 2014

Phnom Penh Municipal Court has summoned the President of the Coalition of the Cambodian Apparel Workers’ Democratic (C.CAWDU) and his two colleagues to appear at the court on April 2 over the embezzlement charge. They have been sued by workers from a Chinese-owned E Garment Co., Ltd for embezzling US$92,929.

In 2007-2008 E Garment factory fired some 61 workers, who were members of C.CAWDU, but the factory later agreed to reinstate those workers after agreement with the union leaders, the complaint said. But, the factory allowed only 28 workers to go to work, while the rest of others were rejected. The complaint said the factory had transferred money – bonus and allowance for workers– to be paid to the 61 workers.

After receiving the money from the factory, the C.CAWDU officials provided package of US$418 and some US$83 per month to each worker who create union, said the complaint, adding that but they were paid from only three to five months. The workers said they had lost some US$39,505 compared to the total amount the factory provided to them.
