Cambodia National Election
Committee (NEC) has announced that five political parties have been
registered to contest in the Capital/Provincial, Municipal/District/Khan
Council Election of 2nd Mandate to be held on 18 May 2014.
The five registered
political parties are (i) Cambodian People’s Party (CPP); (ii) Cambodia
National Rescue Party (CNRP); (iii) FUNCINPEC; (iv) Democratic Republic Party
(DRP) and (v) League for Democracy Party (LDP).
The ruling CPP have registered its candidates for the 25 provinces/capital city and the 197
cities/districts/Khan across the country; while the main opposition CNRP for only 24 provinces/capital city (except Kep province) and 195
cities/districts/Khan; FUNCIPEC, the royalist party, for 4 provinces and 29
cities/districts/Khan; DRP for 2 provinces and 4 cities/districts/Khan and LDP for only a district in Siem Reap province, it said.
The
Capital/Provincial, Municipal/District/Khan Council Election is a non-universal
suffrage. Only the current 11,459 Commune/Sangkat council members are eligible
to vote for the 393 Capital/Provincial council members and 2,931
Municipal/District/Khan council members.
