The Food
and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations announced Monday a new
monthly series on forgotten traditional crops.
Many are
seemingly forgotten or are underutilized despite having outstanding nutritional
or taste qualities, or being suitable for those with food intolerances. Some
could be an excellent cash crop for a small scale or family farmer. The FAO
noted that the Andean super grain quinoa became a sensation in 2013.
Now, once
a month for the next 12 months, FAO will highlight a traditional crop with a
story to tell the statement said, adding that the first would be amaranth.
