Cambodia backs enhanced security role for Japan

2 July 2014

Cambodian Foreign Minister expressed support Monday for Japan's plan to give its Self-Defense Forces a greater role to contribute to global peace and stability, Japanese Foreign Minister said after meeting with his counterpart in Phnom Penh.

Japanese Prime Minister plans to obtain Cabinet approval Tuesday for reinterpreting the pacifist Constitution to enable Japan to exercise the right to collective self-defense, or come to the aid of an ally under attack even if the country itself is not under attack. In the talks, the two foreign ministers shared concerns about North Korea's launch of ballistic missiles on Sunday. They also agreed that maritime security needs to be maintained, given China's growing assertiveness in claiming territorial and other rights in regional waters, with Japan and China at loggerheads over islands in the East China Sea, and tensions between China and Southeast Asian nations in the South China Sea.

Amid growing security concerns, the Japanese and Cambodian foreign ministers confirmed during their meeting plans to hold a bilateral meeting of foreign and defense officials on a regular basis. On the economic front, Japan and Cambodia effectively agreed to the early conclusion of an aviation pact to start regular direct flights.
