Cambodia Plans to Export Edible Bird’s Nests to Chinese Market

The Cambodian Bird’s Nest Federation has revealed an investment plan of approximately US$1.5 billion in producing bird’s nests for export to international markets, mainly China.

According to President of the Cambodian Bird’s Nest Federation, up to 1,500 farms for edible bird’s nests can be set up in different areas across the country, producing some 1,000 kg of bird’s nests per month, but for the first stage, the federation has selected Preah Sihanouk province for over 250 farms, then the next stage will be in Kept, Kampot and Koh Kong provinces. Phnom Penh capital, and Kandal, Kampong Cham, Kampong Thom, Battambang, Pursat and Siem Reap provinces have been also found to be a good place for edible bird’s nest farming.

The world’s edible bird’s nest industry earns more than US$5 billion annually. China is the biggest market and the largest producer and supplier is Indonesia (70%) followed by Malaysia, Thailand, Vietnam and Cambodia.
