CPP, CNRP come closer
to agreement
9 April 2014
The ruling Cambodian
People’s Party (CPP) and the opposition Cambodia National Rescue Party (CNRP) came
closer to agreement in order to end the current post-election dispute. The
working groups of CPP and CNRP introduced three formulas for National Election
Committee (NEC) reform and adjust election date. The agreements came after
behind-the door meeting between working groups of the two parties on 8 April 2014.
The two parties agreed to change election date to be held before July as in
this month there are a lot of rains and the Cambodian farmers are more engaged
in rice plantation.
CPP said the change of
election date didn’t mean a new election in fifth mandate. CNRP Sam Rainsy
raised three possibilities for the NEC reform: (1) the two parties can choose
members from their own parties to form the NEC; (2) Choose independent
individuals as well as people from the two parties to form the NEC; (3) Choose
all independent individuals to form the NEC.
