MRC Urges Its Member Countries to Respect the 1995 Mekong Agreement

5 April 2014

The 2nd Summit of the Mekong River Commission (MRC) held in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, concluded this afternoon by urging the four MRC member countries to stick to the 1995 Mekong Agreement that requires a detailed feasibility study for any hydropower dam project along the Mekong River.

Therefore, Laos must conduct further studies on Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) of the controversial Don Sahong hydropower dam project. Cambodia is the first country to make an official request to Laos to stop the construction of the 260-megawatt Don Sahong hydropower dam. If Laos builds the dam, it has to conduct EIA studies not only in Laos’ territory, but also in the downstream countries such as Cambodia and Vietnam, and to submit the results to the MRC member countries at least six months before the construction starts.
