Phnom Penh City Hall
decides to run public buses by itself after Chinese-owned Global withdrew
itself due to internal issues. Spokesman for the City Hall said that the Global
withdrew itself from the public bus service project after two-month trial from 5
February to 4 April 2014. The authority will not charge children, old and
disabled passengers during the trial from April 4th. Usually an average of
12,000 passengers travelled on the buses per day by paying 1,500 riels per
trip.
Authority is currently
looking for private company to continue the project and will expand the project
by running from Chbar Ampov market to Takmao and to other places. Phnom Penh
Municipality and Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) launched the
public bus project along Monivong Boulevard since 5 Feb 2014. So far the
project received some 40,179 passengers.
