Vietnam's Deputy
Minister of Natural Resources and Environment says a Mekong summit in Ho Chi
Minh City this weekend comes at a "critical time in history",
according to the Mekong River Commission (MRC). The MRC said water's crucial
role in food security and energy "played centre-stage" on the first
day of an international conference on Tuesday. The two-day conference on water,
energy and food security in trans-boundary basins under climate change precedes
a summit of Cambodian, Lao, Thai and Vietnamese leaders on Saturday.
The MRC statement said
China and Myanmar would take part in Saturday's summit as dialogue partners of
the commission, an inter-governmental agency formed by Cambodia, Laos, Thailand
and Vietnam in 1995.
