Cambodian-Americans
are developing diabetes and related conditions at younger ages than their
American counterparts, according to the Hartford Courant. The newspaper
reported Monday that a new study found that Cambodian-Americans in Connecticut
and Massachusetts had poor health despite having access to health care.
The study, published
in the April issue of the Journal of Community Health said respondents reported
almost twice as many chronic health problems, including diabetes, stroke and
cardiovascular disease, when they had also been diagnosed with both depression
and post-traumatic stress disorder. Those surveyed had to have lived in
Cambodia during the Khmer Rouge regime between 1975 and 1979 before moving to US
as refugees. According to the study, the Cambodians had "higher rates of
hypertension, diabetes, and stroke compared to an age-matched sample from the
general Connecticut and Massachusetts population.
