Cambodian People Warned of H7N9 and MERS Coronavirus

Cambodia’s MoH has once again warned people of two new diseases avian influenza H7N9 and MERS Coronavirus that have been identified in China and the Middle East.

Most of the cases of human infection with avian H7N9 virus have reported recent exposure to live poultry, he said, stressing that the symptoms include fever, cough, respiratory problem, etc. For MERS, it is a viral respiratory disease caused by a novel coronavirus (MERS-CoV). Coronaviruses are a large family of viruses that can cause diseases ranging from the common cold to severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS).

To reduce the general risk of infection, people are advised to avoid close contact with people suffering from acute respiratory infections, to frequently wash hands with soap and water, especially after direct contact with ill people or their environment, to adhere to food safety and hygiene rules (avoid undercooked meat, unsafe water; wash or peel fruits and vegetables properly), and to avoid close contact with live farm or wild animals.
