Project on Improving Industrial Relations in the Garment Industry in Cambodia Launched

16 June 2014

Cambodia’s Ministry of Labor and Vocational Training (MOLVT), the ILO Country Office for Thailand, Cambodia and Lao PDR (ILO CO), the Embassy of Sweden in Cambodia, the Swedish fashion company H&MHennes & Mauritz AB, and IF Metall, the Swedish trade union federation, launched officially on 12 June a multi-year initiative to improve industrial relations in the Cambodian garment industry.

The project is supported financially by Sweden and H&M, with in-kind contribution and support from IF Metall, and will be implemented by the ILO. The project will work intensively in a select number of H&M supplier factories, many of which have several trade unions. Unions and management in the factory will be encouraged to sign enterprise-level versions of the industry-wide MOU on Improving Industrial Relations in the Garment Industry, which was signed by GMAC and 8 union confederations in 2012.

The Ministry will benefit from improved confidence of our conciliators, more accurate and transparent record keeping, and improved application of laws and regulations. The ILO encourages this collaborative effort involving national and international partners and looks forward to ensuring that this enterprise-level work will bring significant benefits to both the industry and the Cambodian workers.
