USAID
announced Thursday its Integrated Nutrition, Hygiene, and Sanitation Program
that will improve the lives of mothers and young children.
The
five-year, $16 million project will benefit approximately 500,000 people,
particularly pregnant women, young children, mothers, childcare providers, and
rural communities in Battambang, Pursat, and Siem Reap provinces. Save the
Children Federation, Inc. will lead the implementation of the USAID
project. “We will work with mothers and caretakers to improve the
maternal, infant, and young child feeding behaviors, parenting practices, and
environment in which these children and mothers live.”
In
Cambodia, over one-third of children under five years old cannot reach their
proper height, weight, and brain development due to chronic malnutrition.
According to the World Health Organization and UNICEF, only 20 % of the
population has access to acceptable sanitary conditions.
