Cambodia
has Southeast Asia's highest contribution of forestry to gross domestic product.
In its annual State of the World's Forests report released Monday, the FAO said
the forestry sector accounted for 3.2 % of Cambodia's GDP, a country's total
production of goods and services adjusted for net foreign income.
That
compares with around 2 % for Laos and Malaysia, 1.7 % for Indonesia and
Vietnam, 0.9 % for Thailand and 0.5 % or less for Brunei, Myanmar, the
Philippines and Singapore. In terms of the annual value of forestry production,
however, Cambodia ranked sixth among the members of the Association of
Southeast Asian Nations. Gross value added from Cambodia's forest sector is
about $390 million a year comprising $338 million from roundwood production,
$43 million from pulp and paper along with $10 million from wood processing.
The FAO
said 83.6 percent of Cambodians used wood fuel to cook, by far the highest rate
in ASEAN after Myanmar where 88.4% of the population cook with such fuel. Wood,
however, accounted for only 45.2% of Cambodia's total primary energy supply.
That compared with 100 % for Laos and 80 % for Myanmar.
